SHEILA BAILEY
is a member of the U.K. Registry of Canine
Behaviourists (affiliated to the
Institute of Biology) which is a professional body of canine behavioural
therapists with members practising throughout the U.K. as well
as in Europe, the United States of America, South Africa and Japan.
All members have Professional Indemnity Insurance cover, and follow
a strict code of ethics. She is also on the Board of Management
and is the Education Officer for this organisation. The Board
also have the availability to draw on the expertise of a group
of Professional Advisors which comprises of a number of veterinary
surgeons, a geneticist, a feline behavioural consultant, a bereavement
counsellor, a barrister, a solicitor, a magistrate and a doctor.
Whilst the U.K. Registry (recommended
by the National Canine Defence League) believes that it is essential
for a member to be fully conversant with the scientific knowledge
and up to date research appertaining to canine behaviour, it does
not believe that academic knowledge should be the only criteria
when looking at the credentials of a canine behaviourist. Indeed
the
Registry strongly believes that academic knowledge on its own,
without the necessary 'hands-on' practical experience, does not
bring the necessary depth of knowledge needed for the client to
gain maximum benefit from a consultation. Because of this belief,
all Registry members, in addition to their specialised academic
knowledge of canine behaviour, are also required to show that
they have had, and continue to have, practical experience with
a large variety of dogs.
Sheila is a Certificated Teacher and holds the post graduate qualification of Certificate in Education. She is also a member and Assessor for the Association of Pet Dog Trainers a member of the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour, and an associate member of the Companion Animal Behaviour Therapy Study Group which is affiliated to the B.S.A. V.A.
She opened the Derbyshire Canine Centre in 1987 (after a lifetime of working with animals of differing species) to teach dog owners how dogs think and behave, as she had observed with great concern over the years, that because of our ever increasing urban lifestyle, people were losing their ability to communicate with animals and to understand how they behave.
Sheila holds a Behaviour Clinic at the Derbyshire Canine Centre, the first to be held in the Sheffield, Derbyshire area, to help owners who have problems with their dogs. The consultations are on a one to one confidential basis, and take place in a friendly informal atmosphere. She has now had over sixteen years of experience in this field.
Over five thousand people have attended the Centre with over one hundred different breeds of dogs. They have come from all over England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland whilst our overseas students include those from USA, Sri Lanka, Japan, Sweden, Argentina, Brazil, New Zealand and the Czechoslovakian Republic.
Sheila is particularly interested in encouraging pet owners to give their dogs mental exercise, as well as physical exercise, by encouraging them to participate in the more creative type of work, as can be seen by many of the activities held at the Centre.
She has had students competing, qualifying and winning in the Kennel Club Working Trials in both Open and Championship Stakes at all levels, including 'Ticket' and 'Reserve Ticket' in the top two Stakes, and cups for the "Best Track" and "Best Control Round"
Sheila, as well as taking part in T.
V. and radio programmes, has written articles for Our Dogs,
Kennel Gazette, Companion Dog, breed magazines, book reviews
etc., and has also written articles on Working Trials for Dog
Training Weekly - the Official Journal of the Dog Training
Clubs of Great Britain. She was a regular contributor to the monthly
national magazine
PetDogs for four years, and has written series of articles
for "Your Dog" Magazine.
