Ely
Catling . A fourteen year old servant girl in the Grey
Mare Inn, Newmarket. She is very sensitive and she hates the
cruelty which is accepted almost as a fact of life in seventeenth
century England. Clever and resourceful, she is also rather timid
and is often afraid. Is completely unable to say "no"
to her brother Rob. Many people think her name is short for "Elizabeth"
but it is not. Her name really is "Ely." She was called
after Ely Cathedral.
Prudence. Another servant girl in the Grey Mare. Younger
than Ely.
Mrs Flatman. The owner of the Grey Mare.
Mrs Venner. Helps Mrs Flatman in the Grey Mare. Strict
and sharp with Ely and Prudence her crusty exterior nevertheless
hides her kind nature. Very observant she notices when something
is wrong and tries to help. She is a Puritan, but very much a
moderate Puritan. Every evening she presides over a Bible reading
and prayers in the Grey Mare.
Jack. The ostler at the Grey Mare.
Ned.
The stable boy at the Grey
Mare. Always seems to know about everyone else's affairs.
Is usually proved correct.
Mrs Catling. Ely's mother. A widow who lives alone in a cottage
along the Devil's Dyke. A wise woman or a "cunning"
woman. Knows all about herbs and has some knowledge of healing.
Very shrewd and has a remarkable insight into human nature.
Rob Catling. Ely's
"good-for-nothing" brother. Sullen and disgruntled and
quite different from Ely.
Will. Works in a stables alongside Rob. Is attracted to
Ely.
Lady Eleanor Mountjoy.
A very wealthy and independent lady.
Enjoys travelling. Rides around the countryside accompanied only
by her maid. Keeps a journal. Stays at the Grey Mare. When
she was small she nearly fell into the clutches of a witchfinder.
She never forgot the experience and, because of it, is very kind
to anyone in any kind of trouble, no matter what their station
in life.
Edmund.
Lady Eleanor's favourite nephew.
A student at Cambridge University.
