A story about the ghost of a famous racehorse.
These are still short stories but longer than then usual. Some are from some of my full-length books.
This is the whole of the first three chapters of my latest book Solway Sleuth-Hounds:The First Recruit.
This book is a full length novel of mystery and adventure set in south west Scotland at the end of the eighteenth century. But the first three chapters are complete in themselves and form a long short story. So I have included them in this section.
I wrote this story soon after I began to write in earnest. Years later I incorporated it into Canine Cavalier.
Canine Witch-Hunt is the story of a little girl at the time of Oliver Cromwell. She was lonely and she used to talk to her little dog. Then a witchfinder -- based loosely on the notorious Matthew Hopkins -- came to the village. He heard about the little girl and accused her of being a witch.
The story is mine but the illustrations are by Anne Barron. The little dog is based on Dusty but the ears are wrong. Dusty had erect ears. But the drawings are so good that I just decided to accept them and forget about the ears.
The equivalent of the Papillon at that time had drop ears like a spaniel but the artist made a mistake and gave the dog in the story terrier ears.
