The Mid Steeple, Dumfries has been a landmark in the centre of Dumfries since the eighteenth century.
In the first chapter of Solway Sleuth-Hounds Gretna is imprisoned in it.
This picture forms the frontpiece to the book. It was drawn by the artist Evelyn McKinnell.

This is a picture of Gretna's camp just below Criffel -- the hill which dominates the western part of the Solway Firth on the Scottish side.

The Laird of Longcrags gives Gretna a little pup. She does not like its name, Patch and s decides to give it a gypsy name. It is small enough to go into her basket and so she calls it Rooskie -- the gypsy word for basket.
Throughout the Solway Sleuth-Hounds series Rooskie plays an important part and is a character in his own right.

Gretna's pony. Lucy is a black and white cob. She has a bvery calm and placid temperament. She is caslled Lucy because she was born on the shores of Luce Bay in Wigtownshire.
