The island in chapters of 2 and 3 of Ghost Dog of the Solway is based on Rough Island. It is a tidal island in Rough Firth -- which is where the River Urr flows into the Solway.
At low tide it is possible to walk to Rough Island. Either along the causeway from Kippford or across the mudflats from Rockcliffe.

National Trust notice warning about tides.
Below is a photograph of the causeway to Rough Island covered at high tide. This photograph was taken from the Kippford side.
